Introduction to Sandplay Therapy (Basic Training in Jungian Sandplay Therapy)

The sandplay method consists of the child, or adult client making whatever he or she feels like building with a wide assortment of miniature figures in a tray of sand in the presence of a trained professional. Generally this is done in silence. There is no judgment or comment from the therapist.
The miniature figures, or collection, include representations of all parts of life and fantasy. In addition, there are building materials available to make unique items when needed.
It is the “inner world,” or psyche, of the client that chooses the figures and arranges them in the sand tray. In this way, the less conscious parts of us become visible and are shared in a safe setting. This includes our conflicts, remedies, and potentials. Sandplay work is much the same as working with dream imagery. However, there are significant differences.
Sandplay work is three-dimensional and concrete, so the imagery doesn’t “fade away” as it does with dreams. Because the sand tray scene is constructed in concrete form, the client becomes more aware of what stands in the way of his or her continued growth and personal development. It sits right in front of us in the sand tray. We also become aware of our strengths and gifts, because they are equally visible in the sandplay.
The therapist makes the inner exploration of sandplay safe by respectfully understanding the process as the client moves through deep issues and discovers new ways of being in the world. The depth of the work undertaken in sandplay would be far too hazardous for anyone to undertake alone. The trained therapist’s presence anchors the work in reality. Without this, the client could fall into dangerous psychological territory.

At the end of training, you will

  • Have an overview of the theory and background of Jungian Sandplay Therapy
  • Understand psychic healing and development takes place through the symbols in sandplay
  • Learn how to introduce the client to sandplay and track the client in his/her sandplay
  • Understand the healing and transformative process of sandplay therapy
  • Have some practice on initiating and using sandplay
  • Understand how to integrate Jungian Sandplay in your work with children and adolescents

techniques of reframing, posthypnotic suggestions without trance, and the
use of imagery and metaphors with couples and families. We will investigate
systems in which one member is the symptom bearer and we will also identify
family patterns such as pursue/distance, hostile/dependent, and

Brief Therapy: Key Concepts in the Ericksonian Approach with Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph. D.

This dynamic workshop presents cornerstone principles of Ericksonian strategic psychotherapy. Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (1901-1980), was renowned for his ingenious methods for eliciting patient change. His approach harnessed the power of hypnosis,
but often without the use of formal trance. These brief therapy techniques, such as symptom prescription, reframing, anecdotes and symbols, can be incorporated into any psychotherapeutic discipline and across patient populations to enhance the therapeutic process. Key concepts include goalsetting, gift-wrapping, tailoring, creating a dramatic process and utilization. Applications to problems such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders and trauma are addressed.

Educational Objectives:
- To distinguish five "choice points" that can be used to empower therapy
Given a treatment goal
- To distill ways - To gift-wrap - Tailor and Process the intervention.

Intermediate Training in Gestalt Play Therapy

The Intermediate Training in Gestalt Play Therapy is designed to help the therapist understand further the nature of shame from the theoretical perspective of Gestalt psychotherapy. Shame is one of the least identified causes of behavioral and emotional problems with children, but many of us do not recognize this powerful affect nor do we know how to intervene to neutralize the painful effects of the shaming experience such as abuse, bullying, parenting, and academic difficulties.  In this workshop we will discuss the effects of non-support in the shameful experience, and how we can help children to understand these experiences so that they can become more self-accepting.   Participants will learn a therapeutic approach that allows a child to explore the shameful experience and to be able to accept the shamed aspects of the self.

At the end of training, you will

  • Be able to identify the affective relationship of shame and anger with a faulty sense of self and poor self esteem.
  • Understand the implications of shame and how they affect a child's behaviour
  • Gestalt relational perspective on child development and the nature of the self
  • Develop a clinical process based on the Oaklander Model of Gestalt Therapy with children for supporting children through shame to a greater sense of self- acceptance and self- worth
  • Be able to discuss the importance of integration in the therapy process and ways that the therapy process can strengthen the relational dynamic.
